Search runs across records, and what it may return follows exactly the same visibility rules as everything else.
Search is a door, and doors are checked
An unpublished record, a draft, another organization's data and a record whose type is not public never appear in results — not even as a title. A search index that answers questions the site would refuse to answer is a leak with a nicer interface.
What is indexed
The fields you choose, per content type. Titles and body text are the usual choices; codes, part numbers and SKUs are often more useful.
Taxonomy terms are indexed with the records that carry them, so searching for a category name finds what is in it.
Search as a listing
Search results are a listing like any other, which means they can be filtered, sorted, faceted and displayed however you need. A product search with a price filter and a category facet is configuration, not a feature request.
Documentation search
Documentation pulled in by Sourcebook is indexed like any other content — including video transcripts, so a phrase spoken in a manual finds the manual and the minute it was said.
